Hal tersebut terungkap dalam rapat pembahasan Re-design Medan Zoo yang dipimpin langsung Wali Kota Medan, Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas, di Balai Kota Medan, Jumat 13 Februari 2026. Dalam rapat ini turut hadir Ketua Umum Dewan Pengurus Perhimpunan Kebun Binatang Se-Indonesia (PKBSI) Rahmat Shah, Komisaris Taman Safari Indonesia Tony Sumampau, Pimpinan Perangkat Daerah terkait, Dirut PUD Pembangunan serta para pakar.
Dalam rapat tersebut, Rico Waas menekankan bahwa perbaikan Medan Zoo bukan sekadar soal pembangunan fisik, melainkan soal dedikasi dalam merawat alam dan binatang yang ada. Maka dari itu kematangan konsep menjadi prioritas utama ketimbang sekadar mengejar waktu penyelesaian guna menciptakan keunikan yang berbeda dari kebun binatang lain.
"Membangun alam dan binatang harus menggunakan hati dan niat yang baik. Kita sangat serius membangun Medan Zoo, agar kehadirannya dapat dinikmati langsung oleh masyarakat maupun wisatawan,"kata Rico Waas.
Tidak main-main, pria berkacamata lulusan Universitas Bina Nusantara (Binus) itu berencana akan mengoptimalkan seluruh potensi yang ada. Salah satu upaya yang dilakukan dengan mempopulerkan satwa endemik Sumatera. Sebab menurutnya masih banyak jenis satwa asli pulau ini yang sebenarnya memiliki daya tarik tinggi namun belum dikenal luas oleh masyarakat.
"Ke depannya satwa-satwa ini akan menjadi ikon utama Medan Zoo untuk menarik minat wisatawan,"ujar Rico Waas.
Semangat Rico Waas dalam membangun kembali Medan Zoo mendapat dukungan penuh dari Ketua Umum Dewan Pengurus Perhimpunan Kebun Binatang Se-Indonesia (PKBSI) Rahmat Shah.
Ia berpendapat butuh komitmen kuat dan kebersamaan untuk membangun Medan Zoo secara keseluruhan. Apalagi menurutnya, kehadiran kebun binatang memiliki multi efek, karena akan berpengaruh terhadap lapangan pekerjaan, peternakan dan juga pertanian.
"Meskipun butuh waktu namun saya percaya dengan semangat kebersamaan, kita dapat menghidupkan kembali Medan Zoo. Yang terpenting jangan mengeluh dan saling menyalahkan,"pesannya seraya menyematkan pin PKBSI kepada Wali Kota Medan Rico Waas sebagai bentuk dukungan.
