LensaDaily - Wali Kota Medan, Rico Tri Putra Waas inginkan mengembalikan kejayaan sepatu lokal di Kota Medan seperti pada era 90-an. Langkah awal, digelar sayembara desain sepatu lokal berkualitas serta mendorong masyarat untuk menggunakan produk sepatu lokal.
Di tahun 90-an, prospek penjualan sepatu lokal sangat baik. Namun sejak wabah Covid19 menerpa dan masuknya sepatu dari luar, penjualan sepatu lokal drastis menurun. “Kita ingin mengadakan sayembara desain sepatu,“ kata Rico Waas saat menerima pengurus Kopinkra Sepatu Kulit Medan di Rumah Dinas Wali Kota, Jalan Sudirman, Kamis 28 Agustus 2025.
Kepada pengurus Kopinkra Sepatu Kulit Medan, Rico Waas minta diberi contoh. “Kita ingin lihat yang mana dari pengrajin kita memiliki produk sepatu dengan kualitas dan ketahanan yang terbaik,” ungkapnya.
Orang nomor satu di Pemko Medan ini selanjutnya menyampaikan, pengrajin dan pengusaha sepatu lokal yang ada di Kota Medan wajib didukung agar mereka ke depannya lebih semangat dalam menghasilkan produk-produk baru lebih berkualitas dan diterima masyarakat.
Didampingi Asisten Perekonomian dan Pembangunan Citra Effendi Capah, Kadis Koperasi, UKM, Perindustrian dan Perdagangan Benny Iskandar Nasution dan Kadis Pariwisata M.Odi Anggia Batubara, Rico Waas minta para pengrajin dan pengusaha sepatu dapat meningkatkan kualitas.
Selain kualitas, kata Rico Waas, juga harus meningkatkan quality control dari produk yang sudah ada sekarang agar mampu bersaing di pasar-pasar yang lebih besar
“Nanti pelan-pelan kita rapikan dari segi model, labelisasi, kualitas dan juga ketahanan yang teruji agar bisa kita masukan pelan-pelan ke pasar internasional,” paparnya.
Sementara itu, Azri selaku Ketua Kopinkra Sepatu Kulit Medan mengungkapkan, dulu menjadi seorang pengusaha sepatu memiliki prospek yang menjanjikan di masa depan.
"Di tahun 90-an, prospek penjualan sepatu lokal kita masih sangat baik. Namun semenjak Covid-19 ditambah masuknya sepatu-sepatu dari luar, penjualan sepatu lokal drastis menurun,” terang Azri seraya mengatakan kualitas sepatu lokal tidak kalah dengan kualitas sepatu dari luar.
